Supermarket and food for thought

Supermarket Trip And Food For Thought

On the 23rd of October, The senior syndicate of Waikowhai Primary School went to the supermarket (New World) . Before the trip, we had a visitor from the Heart Kids Foundation and food For thought. The visitor's name was Isabel. She came into one of our classes, and taught us about how much of each food we should have, and how much sugar is in things. In one of our sessions, we got cards that had a drink on it. We had to arrange them to the least sugariest to the sugariest. The sugariest thing was actually a lime fizzy drink, and it had 33 teaspoons of sugar! To investigate further, we got permission to go to New World and look at what was an everyday food choice and what was a "sometimes" food.

When we arrived at the supermarket we got given papers. We filled in good and bad choices for muesli bars, breakfast, bread and dairy. Did you know that the cereal Cocoa Puffs has around 15 grams of sugar while Weet-Bix has around 1.2 grams?
After we filled in the sections, we turned the paper over and filled in veggies in their colour sections. The colours were red, orange, yellow, green, purple, brown and white.
I learnt so much in our sessions and in the trip itself. I think we should learn about this subject a bit more, because it is really interesting.

Beach Clean

Beach Clean

On Friday, the 27th of September the senior syndicate of Waikowhai Primary School went on a beach clean. Previously in the year, we have been learning about the horrible effects of rubbish on the beaches, so the teachers  decided to do something about this. Our plan was to go to Waikowhai Bay (the beach closest to our school) and clean up and hunt for rubbish in different parts of the beach.
At the beginning of the day, we put on our gloves and got our bags, then we headed off to Waikowhai Bay. Once we got to Waikowhai bay, we got put into groups. I was put with Zoe, Chimay, Jia, Abigail, Neeve, Apollo and Araya. There was so much rubbish pushed between rocks and stuffed in high places. I even found an indian statue.

At the end of the day We gathered a few full black rubbish bags. I think there is too much rubbish on the beach, and that other people should care about the ocean and its creatures, just like us. I also think that the Beach Clean was a great idea because we were helping the environment.
